What is operating system?

Operating system is an interface between a computer user and computer hardware. Modern operating systems use a graphical user interface or GUI. A GUI lets you use your mouse to click icons, buttons, menus and displayed on the screen using a combination of graphics and text. Some popular operating systems include Linux, Windows, Mac OS and operating systems for mobile devices.

Mac OS is line of operating systems created by Apple. It comes loaded on all new Macintosh computers or Macs.

Linux is open-source operating systems, which these can be modified and distributed by anyone around the world. This is different from proprietary software like Windows. The advantages of Linux are that it is free and there are many different distributions.

Operating systems for mobile devices include Apple iOS and Google Android. iOS running on an iPad and iPhone. Mobile devices such as phones, tablet computers, and MP3 players are different from desktop and laptop computers.

An operating system is a software which performs all basic tasks like file management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, and controlling disk drives and printers.
